Open Bulk Editor FAQ

Open Bulk Editor questions for Shopify stores

Answers about product and variant edits, prices, metafields, images, CSV behavior, local data, licensing, recovery limits, and the planned Pro edition.

How is Open Bulk Editor different from Shopify's built-in bulk editor?

Shopify's built-in editor is useful for direct changes in a table. Open Bulk Editor is a separate Windows desktop tool for jobs that need multi-condition filters, several actions in one task, row-by-row preview, local backups, rollback, Safe CSV, or catalog checks.

What Shopify product data can I bulk edit?

Product fields include titles, descriptions, vendor, product type, handle, SEO fields, status, tags, and metafields. Variant fields include SKU, barcode, price, compare-at price, taxable status, inventory policy, inventory quantity, and metafields. Image actions update ALT text and filenames. Available fields depend on the task and Shopify permissions.

Can I bulk edit Shopify product and variant prices?

Yes. You can set prices, add or subtract a fixed amount or percentage, round decimal places, or set a price ending such as .99. You can also edit compare-at prices. The current version does not schedule a future sale start or end time.

Does Open Bulk Editor upload my Shopify catalog to its own cloud?

No. The desktop app connects from your computer to the Shopify Admin API. Credentials, previews, templates, backups, and logs stay in the local app data folder. License activation and validation contact the license service, so the app is not completely offline.

Can I try it before buying a license?

Yes. You can connect a store, scan, preview changes, and run read-only analysis without a license. A valid license is required for writes, image updates, CSV writes, rollback, and redo.

Can I bulk edit Shopify metafields?

Yes. Standard can set or clear product and variant metafields by namespace, key, type, and value. A definition-aware metafield browser and generated inputs are planned for Pro and are not part of the current version.

Can it bulk edit Shopify product images?

It can scan product images and update image ALT text and filenames after preview. It does not compress, crop, resize, or convert the image files.

Is Standard a subscription?

No. Standard is a one-time purchase for one active device. The current launch price is $79, and the regular price is $99.

How will I receive my Standard license?

Pay with PayPal using the link on the Pricing page. After confirming the payment, we send the license key to the email address used at checkout. License delivery is currently handled manually.

What happens when a CSV cell is blank?

In the update flow, a blank cell leaves the Shopify value unchanged. Use __CLEAR__ to empty a field or __NULL__ when a supported field should become null.

Can every change be rolled back?

Recoverable field updates store original values for rollback. Permanent product deletion, variant deletion, cascading option deletion, and newly created products have different recovery limits. The app labels those operations clearly before execution.

Which operating systems are supported?

Open Bulk Editor 1.0.0 is available for Windows as an installer and a Portable ZIP. Both downloads include SHA-256 checksums. The installer is not currently digitally signed, so Windows SmartScreen may show a warning.

Is this a Shopify app or an official Shopify product?

No. Open Bulk Editor is an independent desktop tool for Shopify stores. It is not created by, affiliated with, or endorsed by Shopify Inc.

When will Pro be available?

Pro is in development and has no published release date. The roadmap describes the intended scope, but Pro is not available for purchase.
